What is the 2008 NSM Commencement Ceremony?
This year, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Commencement Ceremony will recognize 2007 summer and fall graduates and 2008 spring “conditionally approved” candidates for degrees.
Members of the UH Board of Regents will confer degrees on all candidates from the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral graduating classes. Each student will be acknowledged individually.
Whom may I call for information about commencement?
The NSM Office of the Dean is your first point of contact for information about the commencement ceremony. You can reach the dean’s office by calling 713-743-2611.
Whom may I call for information about my graduation audit and/or status?
Your undergraduate or graduate staff advisor is your contact for information about graduation status. You can reach your graduate advisor by calling NSM departmental offices. You can reach your undergraduate staff advisor by calling 713-743-2626. The NSM Undergraduate Advising Center is located in room 120 of the Science Building.
Whom should I contact for cap and gown or invitation information?
The UH Bookstore has all the information. Please contact the University of Houston Bookstore.
I graduated in summer 2007 or fall 2007. When will I receive information about the 2008 commencement?
Reservation forms will be mailed in mid-February to 2007 summer and fall graduates (both undergraduate and graduate). Information packets can be picked up in the NSM Dean’s Office upon submission of your completed reservation form. If you have questions, please contact your undergraduate or graduate staff advisor.
I applied to graduate this spring 2008 semester. When will I receive information about the 2008 commencement?
If you are a master's or Ph.D. candidate and are completing a thesis or dissertation, you will receive information with your “conditionally approved” initial audit. Anticipated mailing of these audits is April 2008. Only those graduate candidates who have submitted their theses or dissertations by the deadline are eligible to participate. Remember, the deadline this semester to submit your defended, ready for binding document is Monday, April 28, 2008. If at any time, you have concerns about your audit, you are required to review these issues with your departmental graduate advisor. Graduate candidates who plan on submitting their thesis or dissertation during the summer 2008 semester will be ineligible to walk during the 2008 ceremony and may walk in May 2009.
If you are a non-thesis option master's or Ph.D. candidate, you will receive information with your “conditionally approved” initial audit. Anticipated mailing of these audits is April 2008. If you have concerns about your audit, you are required to review these issues with your department graduate advisor.

Deadline to return the NSM Commencement Reservation form to the NSM Office of Dean in Room 214 SR1 is April 25, 2008. This must be done in person only. Hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.
How many guests can I invite?
The 2008 NSM Commencement Ceremony is open to all guests. No tickets are required, and there is no limit on the number of guests you may invite. Please be sure to turn in your reservation form early. We will need to create name cards to be read during the ceremony.
I believe I will graduate summer 2008 or fall 2008. Can I still walk?
Only 2007 summer and fall graduates and “conditionally approved” 2008 spring candidates will be allowed to walk during the 2008 NSM Commencement Ceremony.
May I invite a faculty member to walk with me in the ceremony?
NSM master's and Ph.D. candidates may invite a member of the faculty to walk with them in the ceremony. To “reserve” his or her faculty member of choice, the graduate student must fill out an official request form but only after the faculty member has agreed to attend and walk with the student. Faculty may accompany only one student during the ceremony. Request forms will be available in the Office of the Dean, room 214 SR1 beginning March 13, 2008, and will be due back as soon as possible, or by the April 6, 2008, deadline.
