  • Spring 2014 candidates - Although you may participate in Commencement, your graduation is actually contingent upon successful completion of your degree requirements and coursework by the end of the semester. Reservations

When you apply for graduation through myUH make sure you indicate you will walk in the ceremony and if you wish to have your name printed in the Commencement Program.

If you graduated in Fall 2013 or before and would like to participate in this commencement ceremony, you will need to submit the Prior Semester Graduate - Participation Form. You can submit the form by email to mlowrey@uh.edu or turn it in to the NSM Academic Affairs Office (S&R 1, Suite 202).  We will use this to verify that you completed your degree. Also, please don’t forget to provide the phonetic spelling of your name.  Forms must be completed by Friday, April 11, 2014 at 5:00pm.

Participants will be checked against a list to confirm eligibility to participate.

Commencement Program

We make every effort to insure that all graduating students who apply on time are in the Commencement Program. However, please be aware of the following information: If at any time you have requested privacy protection for your academic records, your name cannot be published in the program by law unless you have indicated on your application for graduation that you desire your name to be included in the program. If your degree plan was not on file at the time you applied to graduate or you applied late your name may not appear in the Commencement Program.

Although your name might not be included in the printed program, you will still be individually recognized by name as you cross the stage. The program is not an official document and does not guarantee you have met all requirements for graduation.

Name Cards

While you are in your department line, you will receive a graduation name card (mentioned above) on which the phonetic spelling of your name will be printed. Hold your card until it is your turn on stage. Your name will be read from this card as you cross the stage. Do not lose your card.

Doctoral graduates do not wear the hoods for the processional. You will be hooded on stage.

Recognition of Graduates and Candidates

Recognition will start with Doctoral, then Master's, and then Bachelor's graduates. Each graduate will be announced in alphabetical order by college then departmental order.

As you approach the edge of the stage

  1. Give your name card to the person collecting the cards.
  2. Walk across the stage to shake hands with the President and Dean.
  3. Continue to behind stage where you will, again, have your picture taken by a professional photographer.
  4. Go back to your seat.
  5. Remain seated until all students have been recognized. (You will not be allowed to leave the ceremony early. Please be respectful of all participants in the ceremony.)
  6. Follow the person in front of you when the recessional begins.

The line should be continuous. Staff will direct candidates and graduates to the stage, a few rows at a time. Many people have volunteered to help direct this special event. Just follow their instructions, watch the person in front of you and enjoy family members, friends, cheering, clapping, and flashing cameras. Have a great time!

Diploma

Please be aware that the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has 60 days from the official closing date of the semester to award degrees. Diplomas are normally mailed eight weeks after degrees have been approved and officially conferred and posted. Decisions of awarding degrees do not begin until May 16, 2014. Students can check the status of their diploma at MichaelSutter.com/UH

Diplomas are mailed directly to students at the most current address provided through their myUH student account. The diploma printing company will also send email notifications to diploma recipients indicating when diplomas have been mailed. It’s important to keep contact information updated in myUH to avoid shipment delays.

Alums graduating as of summer 2008 and/or who have placed order(s) for additional diplomas from other graduating semesters, can check their Diploma Order Status online. Contact AskShasta if you have additional questions about your diploma order.

Please note: Effective September 1, 2009, there is a $25.00 fee for each additional diploma ordered (postmarked by or fax received on or after this date). This fee does not apply to the initial diploma mailed upon graduation, but will apply to additional quantities as requested via the diploma order form.*

* The fee is applicable to diplomas requested as a result of a diploma name change. Diploma names must be provided at the time of completing the online graduation application. Failure to do so may result in a $25 diploma order fee for subsequent name changes.
