The family of Professor of Mathematics Michael Friedberg has established a scholarship fund in his memory. Friedberg, 69, a well-respected faculty member who taught at the University of Houston for 41 years, died unexpectedly at home Sept. 12.

Contributions may be sent to the Michael Friedberg Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the NSM Development Office, 214 Science and Research Building 1, Houston, Texas 77204-5008.

Friedberg is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Coats, and a sister, Roberta Russell.

He joined UH in 1967, specializing in topological algebra with an emphasis in topological semigroups. He earned teaching excellence awards at both the college and university level.

Before coming to UH, Friedberg was an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee and at Emory University. He earned a B.S. in mathematics in 1961 from the University of Miami and a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 1965. He also received an M.B.A. in 1984 from UH.
