In February, an agreement of understanding was signed by John Bear, Dean of the UH College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Hussein Fahmy, Vice Dean of the Modern Academy in Egypt. The agreement is to develop joint training and graduate programs in geosciences, computer science, and technology between the two universities. The Modern Academy is a private English-speaking university in Cairo.
“The ultimate objective is to offer certified degrees in petroleum geophysics, computer science, and technology,” said Dean Bear. “Our short-term objectives are graduate and training programs in these three areas, and our long-term objectives are undergraduate degrees.”
Although the university is located in Egypt, the agreement will serve all of the countries of the Middle East by forging a relationship between Egypt and UH through educational and research opportunities in scientific and technological disciplines.
“In 1988 I visited UH and first met Dr. Bear. I have been looking forward to developing a relationship with UH since then.” said Fahmy. “We hope to begin training programs in petroleum geophysics and computer science as early as January 2006, and by the end of that year we would like to add technology programs and begin offering degrees in that field.”
