The University of Houston chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon (PME), the Honorary National Mathematics Society, is back in business thanks to three UH Mathematics Enthusiasts (UHME) and their advisor, Professor of Mathematics Gordon Johnson, along with the support of Mathematics Chairman Jeffrey Morgan.
PME is a national organization dedicated to promoting mathematics and recognizing students who are successful in their pursuit of this discipline. The National PME Council encourages student participation from PME chapters across the nation through an annual conference with the Mathematics Association of America and as sponsor of a mathematics journal.
“Reviving the UH Chapter of PME will provide an opportunity for students to be recognized nationally and, in conjunction with UHME, to share ideas, discuss timely topics, and investigate problems in mathematics,” says Johnson. “It’s rewarding to have students bring an organization such as this back to the UH campus.”
Math majors Frank Sturm and Robert Mendez and math/physics major Jennifer Weaver, all 2004-2005 Coordinators of UHME—a campus organization focused on building a community of math enthusiasts http://nsm.uh.edu/students/uhme.htm —are currently working on a Web page for the PME UH chapter and are actively recruiting members.
Membership is open to UH undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members in mathematics or related subjects, and any person who has achieved distinction in a mathematical science. For complete eligibility requirements, please visit the National PME Council Web site at http://www.pme-math.org/ .
