PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF GEOLOGY MARGARET STEARNS BISHOP REMEMBERED - Private Ceremony Held by Family and Friends

A private family ceremony was recently held in memory of Margaret Stearns Bishop, University of Houston Professor Emeritus of Geology, who died peacefully on May 17, 2005.

Dr. Bishop was the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Michigan (1933). She began her career as a geologist for a then large exploration company, Pure Oil, in Chicago, Illinois. She and her husband later established Bishop and Bishop Consulting in Michigan

In 1953, Margaret Bishop became a professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Houston. She was a noted subsurface specialist and in 1960 authored the textbook Subsurface Mapping. Through the National Teacher Education Act, Dr. Bishop established one of the early programs to teach non-geologist science teachers how to teach geology. During her time as Chair of the Department of Geology, Dr. Bishop established a program in geophysics in 1969, which from its inception to today has attracted professors with international reputations and students who have become international leaders.

Margaret Bishop is survived by her two sons, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family remembered her in a private ceremony and asks that any donations be made to the University of Houston Department of Geosciences.
